Bikes Belong’s Key Accomplishments

Since 1999, Bikes Belong has been working to make bicycling better in America. By unifying the bike industry and aligning with influential partners, we’re creating safer places to ride and getting more people on bikes.

A united bike industry

Before Bikes Belong was established in 1999, the bicycle industry rarely cooperated to improve bicycling conditions. Now, 400 suppliers and retailers are using their collective power to get more people riding bikes. Learn more about who we are.

A voice in Washington, D.C.

Thanks to our federal lobbing efforts, support of the National Bike Summit, and campaign contributions made by BikesPAC, we have developed strong relationships with influential members of Congress. These friends of bicycling help pass bicycle-friendly legislation and boost federal support for biking. Learn more about how we influence federal legislation.

$4.5 billion for bicycling

We invested $1 million in a coordinated lobbying effort that won $4.5 billion for bicycling in SAFETEA-LU—the last federal transportation law. This money pays for new bike paths, trails, lanes, routes, and other facilities and programs coast to coast. Learn more about our work in Washington, D.C.

1,630 miles of bike paths and trails funded

Through our grants program, we’ve awarded nearly $1.6 million in cash that has leveraged close to $550 million in federal, state, and private funding. Our facilities grants alone have helped fund more than 1,630 miles of bike paths and trails that connect almost 7,500 miles of trail facilities. Learn more about our Grants Program.

Thousands of bicycling projects nationwide

We helped increase federal Transportation Enhancements money to fund new bike facilities and programs throughout the country. For a list of projects near you, visit the National Transportation Enhancements Clearinghouse.

Millions of media impressions

Bikes Belong is a trusted source of bicycling information for the national media. We provide newspaper, radio, and television interviews to journalists throughout the country. We contribute to stories in top U.S. dailies, as well as articles distributed by the leading global wire service networks and hundreds of other media outlets nationwide. More bicycle friendly communities

We fund projects and programs that make communities better for bicycling.
  • We’re a lead sponsor of the Bicycle Friendly Community program—run by the League of American Bicyclists—which recognizes cities that support bicycling and works to replicate their successes. In 2008, we helped this effort expand to Bicycle Friendly State and Bicycle Friendly Business programs.
  • We support the National Complete Streets Coalition, which strives to require new or retrofitted streets to accommodate bikes, pedestrians, and public transit in addition to automobiles.
  • We’re sponsoring the Alliance for Biking and Walking to help them help communities access and use federal transportation funds.
  • We give money to the International Mountain Bicycling Association to support their efforts to provide great mountain bike opportunities.

National Safe Routes to School program

We helped win federal money for the first national Safe Routes to School program, and now we’re making sure the money is put to good use. As host organization for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership, we support efforts to maximize the effectiveness of the national program. Bicycling: Moving America Forward booklet

As part of our effort to help make a case for bicycling, we created a booklet that outlines the many benefits of bicycling. We’ve distributed 50,000 copies to help bicycling proponents throughout the country garner support from community and government leaders. View the booklet and other resources we’ve created.
